This transaction follows the trades that brought Fox to San Antonio and Lavine to Sacramento. The second-round picks from Denver, along with Sissoko, were acquired in this three-team deal.
The more significant aspect of this trade is that moving Huerter to Chicago allowed the Kings to absorb Valanciunas' salary without worrying about luxury tax implications. By not using their cap flexibility on Tre Jones (who went to Chicago in the Fox deal), it indicates that they prioritize strengthening their frontcourt over finding a traditional point guard replacement for Fox.
The addition of Valanciunas gives them a solid option at center; he stands at 2.11 meters and weighs 120 kilograms – ideal size for battling against larger opponents. Previously, they relied on Trey Lyles (at just 2.06 meters) as Sabonis’ backup, but Lyles is inherently more suited as a power forward.
I am curious whether Coach Christie will consider playing both Sabonis and Valanciunas together since they've successfully partnered before while representing Lithuania nationally during EuroBasket 2022 where they averaged combined contributions of 28.7 points and 17.8 rebounds per game en route to reaching the Round of16.
